"How Do We Know Who To Obey?"

How To Know Whom To Obey

Jessica: You know there are so many authority figures. It’s hard to tell whom we should obey at times these days. Although we have so many authority figures the Bible tells us we should worship one particular being in general. Jennifer do you know who that is?

Jennifer: Jehovah God, right?

Jessica: Right! Matthew 4:10 talks about what Jesus said to Satan when Satan tempted Jesus. (Then Jesus said to him: “Go away Satan!” For it is written, ‘It is Jehovah God you must worship, and it is to him you must render sacred service.”

Jennifer: Oh that’s right. What’s that scripture say. …obey God before men..

Jessica: Yes. It says in the Bible we must worship Jehovah only and Obey Jehovah God before men. (Acts 5:29)

Jennifer: It also says though some other things and you know it seems like the Bible contradicts itself there. That’s why I’m not quite as sure.

Jessica: Well Jennifer, the Bible is our upmost source of truth because it is God’s word. But the Bible says to be in subjection to someone in particular in a plural sense.

Jennifer: That would be the superior authorities right?

Jessica: Yes, it would be the superior authorities. Romans 13:1,2 includes a statement about this. Let’s open our Bible’s there. I’ll read.

Jennifer: Now this is where it gets difficult. It’s hard to signify which authorities to obey first. I mean I understand Obeying Jehovah first is important but I sometimes worry about the choices my children will have to make. It can be really confusing at times. I’ll have to really work to teach them to signify listening to superior authorities according to which is most important for their safety and everlasting life.

Jessica: Just think. It’s just like riding a bike. First you start out with training wheels. Next, you eventually take the training wheels off and balance. Just like we need balance to ride a bike we also need balance in making choices about which authorities we obey first. Primarily parents look out for our initial best. Jennifer will you read Ephesians 6: 1-3

Jennifer: Sure. [Reads] Ahh. I see how well this scripture applies. Thanks for going over this with me.

Jessica: Your welcome.
